August 12, 2013 Weekly Open Thread
We start this week with a little bit of a mystery photograph:
Much of the work in early 20th century Egyptology was carried out in Model T's (not sure if that's one or not, btw), as indeed they were elsewhere. This photo was apparently taken after Carter had discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 and the image itself is from a recent Daily Mail article on the release of letters in the Carter estate having to do with the supposed "curse". Most of the stories related to the Curse of Tutankhamun have been debunked over the years, but it still keeps cropping up every now and then, although only one death supposedly linked to the curse is even vaguely automobile related. Perhaps most problematic for curse enthusiasts is Howard Carter himself who was the first to enter the tomb but apparently lived a curse-free life for another 17 years.
We still have a few years to go until the centenary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, which will occur on November 29, 2022 but we're getting a slight jump on things here at Car Lust.
