Carspotters' Challenge #56--Sunset Strip, 1979

Swimmin' pools, movie stars... and great '70s vintage cars! Why, Cecil B. DeVille himself couldn't have assembled a better cast of Car Lust Delectables for this week's Carspotters' Challenge.

Our occasional contributor Tigerstrypes found this beauty shot. And if I may, I'd like to suggest that we all click here to get the best resolution of the image, sweetheart. That's better than sunglasses; there's no need to squint while you're in Tinsel Town. ("Look, is that John Belushi I see over there? Hey, John!")

Tigerstrypes, Car Challenge Sunset Strip

In 1979, there was still more plastic on many stars' faces than on the fronts of cars. And this year is special to me, as it was the first year I visited The Strip, babe. So this picture brings back memories, as it looks exactly as it did when I first saw the place.

There weren't too many telephones in cars back then, so some of these folks may be rushing home to wait for that call from the studio. Their agents said that the audition went well, so now here comes the studio's standard "Rich & Famous" contract.

Let's keep in touch.

I lived very near where this photo was taken about 2 years before this photo was taken. At the time this photo was taken, I lived a bit further away but was no stranger to this area. My hobbies were reading paperback Edmunds pricing guides, Consumer Guide, Motor Trend (to which I subscribed from 77-79) and generally just checking out cars like the ones in this photo. :-)

I'll never forget the first time I saw a 1975 Cadillac like the yellow 75-76 in the photo following the VW Beetle. The T-birds of this era, like the brown one in front of the Beetle, were very popular cars at this time.

I think I see three VW Beetles in the photo. They were just past their peak here in 1979, if memory serves correctly, as 1979 was their last new model year here.

TCG, the Beetle "hardtop" was offered thru 77 while the convertible survived till 79.

And it's amazing how these cars have shot up in value as of late, especially a late-model Beetle ragtop.

If sources are correct, the standard Beetle sedan and convertible were offered through 1979; the Super Beetle had left us by then.

Direct from Wikipedia, so take it for what it's worth (lol)

"Volkswagen sold Beetle sedans in the US until August 1977 (the Beetle convertible/Cabriolet was sold until January 1980) and in Europe until 1985"

Guess there's some conflicting info as to which is which - honestly don't really care much as I was never much of a Beetle fan to begin with, although if I had the $ I wouldn't mind having one of those late-model convertibles in my collection strictly for the collector value those are now bringing.

I see a white Mercury Monarch just under Cher.

Starting with the closes row of cars in each lane:
1971 Dodge Van, 1971 Buick Skylark, Datsun B210

2nd row in each lane:
1975 Toyota Celica, 1977 Ford Thunderbird, 1968 Chevrolet Nova, Volvo 144

3rd row:
Toyota Corona, 1974 VW Super Beetle, 1979 Ford Mustang, 1976 Plymouth Arrow

4th row:
1975 Mercury Monarch, Datsun 510?, 1976 Cadillac Coupe De Ville. Mercedes-Benz 450SEL, 1971 Chevrolet Camaro,

5th row:
1971 Cadillac Sedan De Ville, Volvo 145, Datsun 260Z

I also see a nice Fiat 124 Sport Spider coming towards the camera.

I think we all know how I feel about Eddie Money

At the top of the curve under the Judy Collins billboard, is a '72 T-Bird followed by what looks like a white '57 T-Bird. The the lane to the right behinde the Dodge van looks to be a gold-ish colored '67 Jaguar S-Type.

"The the lane to the right behinde the Dodge van looks to be a gold-ish colored '67 Jaguar S-Type."

Dang I would have been killed by my parents for the spelling and grammar errors in that sentence!

And is it just me or does Cher look particularly scarey in that billboard? Almost alien like.

I'm sure if Cher could turn back time, she'd take that picture down.

The Judy Collins album the billborad is promoting dates this to 1979 (Hard Times for Lovers).

Whiose the guy on the front sign?

"And is it just me or does Cher look particularly scarey in that billboard? Almost alien like."

Cher has ALWAYS looked scary, especially in those outlandish whacked-out attention-whore outfits she always wore (and probably still does)... yikes

"Whiose the guy on the front sign?"

That's the aforementioned Eddie Money.

"1971 Dodge Van, 1971 Buick Skylark, Datsun B210"

Where are you getting the B210 from? That tiny little fragment of a front corner? If so, call me impressed!

"Cher has ALWAYS looked scary, especially in those outlandish whacked-out attention-whore outfits she always wore (and probably still does)... yikes"

I just noticed that they way her name is stylized, with the big "C" and "her", it says "See her".

"I think we all know how I feel about Eddie Money"

I take it someone is not an Eddie Money fan...

Is that a Porsche 911 with a whale-tail parked on the right edge of the image, just above the green-blue Volvo?

First visited Sunset Strip during Spring Break 1983. I remember being surprised at how low-rent the area seemed, but then again, I was just a kid raised on 1970s television, where California looked like paradise. We made a pilgrimage to the Alta Cienega Motel, stood in front of Jim Morrison's room.

Is that a (silver with black top) Nissan 1600/2000 Fairlady in the far right lane?

Also, the yellow Celica has an aftermarket front spioiler...spoiling what otherwise is a nice looking car.
