August 20 Weekly Open Thread--The Last Ride of Summer

Summer is almost over. Some of the kids have one more week of vacation, others start class this week; the band kids are finishing up band camp, and the football players have been doing two-a-days for almost a month. There's just enough time for one last ride, one last car show, one last cruise-in--like the one my friend Walter Lundby came across last Friday in Wheaton, Illinois.

Lineup 2
We'll have more of Walter's pictures later in the week.  For now, this is the place for your random comments on all things automotive.

I had a true Car Lust™ Moment™ this morning: I got into my '78 Mustang II and the theme from Shaft was playing on the radio.

True it would have been better had I gotten into a similar vintage El Dorado, but still. . . .

Hey Anthony, does your 'stang have a posi rear end?

My Car Lust™ Moment™ occurred this morning, when I read a blog entry by James Lileks. (http://www.lileks.com/bleats/archive/12/0812/082012.html) He mentioned that he had taken his 12-year old daughter to the store because "She wanted to get a clutch." My first thought was that it's good that she wants to learn on a manual transmission. My second thought was that I didn't realize they were issuing learners' permits to sixth graders.

I've been seeing scads of Corolla S's around here lately. I thought it might be some performance model -- STOP LAUGHING -- but it turns out it's mostly only an appearance package. But I wonder if A) Those things are tunable to be little pocket rockets, or B) Toyota could actually tune it up some to make a cheap little pocket rocket.

Summer can't be over. I haven't taken a vacation yet.

I'm driving the MG from Nashville to Dallas and looking forward to it.

Chris, I was thinking the same thing about Summer... I can't wait for the 4th of July.

But wait... we had that. The heat here was terrible, so I missed it.

BTW, I live near Nashville. Wanna do a post on your drive to Dallas in the MG?

I'll think about it. I'm going to stop by the State Fair when I get to Dallas, so maybe something interesting will happen.

I should be back in time for this year's Nashville British Car Club show on October 13 (or is the 11th?). I'll definitely be stopping by with my camera.

Chris, here's the 2010 British Car show: http://www.carlustblog.com/2010/10/2010-nashville-british-car-club-show-1.html

And the 2011: http://www.carlustblog.com/2011/11/2011-british-ccs.html

I hope to be there this year as well.

Cheers!

I made it to the show in 2010 and got some decent pictures.

Maybe with all this rain, Centennial Park will be green and not brown.

Hope to see you there on October 13th. http://www.nashvillebritishcarclub.org/CarShowInfo
