Mazda MX-6

There's nothing really special about the Mazda MX-6--it's not hugely muscular, it doesn't boast exotic mechanicals or a sterling motorsports heritage, and it drives and handles much like the Mazda 626 sedan on which it's based.

In the interest of full disclosure, the MX-6 is an object of Car Lust for one reason and one reason only--to my eyes, the smooth, flowing contours of the MX-6 are both lovely and understated in a way that is, admittedly, thoroughly out of style today. With its pleasing proportions and delicate touches (such as the classic, slender roof pillars), the MX-6 married sleek aerodynamics with the spareness of line that made 1960s cars so special.

Today's cars are much more extroverted than the MX-6, and while contemporary sharp edges and bold styling treatments were welcome changes after the anonymous look of many 1990s cars, the MX-6 to my mind was one of the most elegant treatments of last decade's look, certainly much nicer and vastly classier than its Ford Probe sibling.

To me, anyway, it looked a bit like a mass-produced 1990s Japanese version of the Alpine Renault A110, one of the prettiest cars around.

Maybe it's just me.

There's an excellent resource and group of forums for Mazda MX-6 lovers--fittingly enough, at www.mx6.com.
